No need to feel pain...
If you feel a painful sensation
in your teeth when you're eating or drinking, you may be one of more than
seven million Canadians who suffer from dentin hypersensitivity or sensitive
teeth. This is concerning because, the fact is, sensitive teeth are an
early warning sign of both major and minor dental problems.
Teeth become sensitive when
the enamel that covers the top of the tooth or the cementum that protects
the root of the tooth, wears down exposing the dentin below. When these
protective coatings are damaged allowing hot or cold foods to come in
contact with the dentin - it hurts! Even though enamel is the body's hardest
structure, it can wear down with aging, fractures, gum disease, tooth
grinding or even brushing too hard. You may have a loose filling or even
a nerve infected or inflamed by decay.
Because tooth sensitivity is
the result of an underlying problem, we encourage you to report it right
away.
Appropriate treatments range from use of a desensitizing toothpaste to
the application of a resin coating,
which seals sensitive areas. Root canal treatment may even be required
to remove an infected nerve.
